day 8: jobs.

(this is not it.)

okay, okay, okay! i'm back! we all knew i wouldn't post everyday, so let's just not get our panties in a knot because i'm four days behind. i've been busy. trust me.

two days ago i was walking up university avenue, just minding my own business, looking cute, enjoying the sun, right? and i walked past this relatively new restaurant that i've heard great things about, and i walked in and asked about the help wanted sign in the window. fifteen minutes later, after a talk with the owner, i was scheduled for a 6am stage (st-ah-ge) the next morning. i made some rocking brownies and pumpkin bread pudding, chopped a thousand onions, de-seeded a million chiles, and a few other things. anyway, i guess they liked me because they had me come back in last night during working hours, chop a million onions this time (i have a blister from the knife), and learn how to plate all the food and make it gorgeous. 12 hours of work for free, people. and i was working hard. a kitchen is full of knives and hot things, people are running everywhere, and you have to be freaking fast, otherwise people are yelling at you. this is no cute little cafe. so, that's where i've been the past couple of days. not to mention midterms. those are sucking these days. oh, anyway, i did get the job as a prep chef.

can i tell you why this is exciting? because i've wanted to go to culinary school and maybe own something of my own someday (small. very very small.) and getting my foot in the door of a good kitchen is kind of better than culinary school. i've already learned a few tricks that are pretty awesome. plus, i love cooking. and working in a kitchen full of men (ya heard!). i was so anxious about this whole endeavor that sleeping was hard. i was panicking, and if you read my tweets you'd see that. so glad that's over!

so there. i was busy. and i had a darn good excuse, too. i'll keep ya'll updated on the happenings of the kitchen.

so, uh, i'm thankful for good jobs that don't make you want to gouge your eyes out.

  1. Do you watch Master Chef? I LOVE THAT SHOW. It is all home chefs that are in it to win a cookbook deal. And I would be super interested to read some of the tips you learned in the kitchen at your job! You should blog some of them! *especially any regarding cutting up veggies or onions. I SUCK at that.
