Midnight Snack

If you are like me, you know what nights are like: your mind awakens and the anxiety washes over you as you realize you didn't send that "thank you" letter you were supposed to send last month, the the questions you failed to ask all of the sudden hit you, maybe you realized that college applications are due tomorrow and you have yet to write the required essays, or you simply just realized that you haven't practiced with your dance partner in over a month (and that upcoming competition is actually this Saturday, - somebody must of rescheduled it for an earlier time)... you get the picture. It's an almost nightly routine for me. The second I succumb to listening to what my brain has to tell me in the dark hours (because heaven forbid it remembers all of this in the middle of the day!), well, I'm a goner.

Looking back over my journals, many of which only started then pitifully neglected, I realize that almost every entry was written in the wee small hours of the morning. Go figure. That is only the beginning. Now, now this is where midnight snack comes into play.

Tossing and turning, thinking and partially dreaming, I find myself walking the well-worn path to the kitchen. Most times there isn't much that is easily accessible besides some cheese, milk, and eggs. You know the fantastic quote from Anchor Man starring the dashing young actor, Will Ferrell, when he's talking to his beloved K9: "What? You pooped in the refrigerator? And you ate the whole... wheel of cheese? How'd you do that? Heck, I'm not even mad; that's amazing. How 'bout we get you in your p.j.'s and we hit the hay." Well, a dog can do it, and so can I. Don't leave any fresh mozzarella in the fridge, because there is a good chance it will be completely gone in the morning.

What? Half a gallon of ice cream? Don't be silly! ... of course I can.

So what about tonight? After eating my dinner that was lovingly kept warm for me after dance, and eating the nuts that were on the counter, and eating the cucumber salad that was left out, and a few other things... I thought it was time for a berry cobbler. In the past week I have made two apple crisps, but tonight called for some immediate action (apples take a long time too much). So I thew those raspberries and blueberries into that dish and I stirred up a delicious blend of suger, oats, flour, and butter, lots of butter, and set it into the oven where it baked and bubbled into my delicious nighttime snack. You know, I'm just preparing for the hours ahead in which I need a little something to tide me over. And now my family is asleep and there is a whole cobbler sitting out. Whatever am I going to do?

Well, I have a busy night ahead of me, so I must bid you a good night and happy slumbers. Cheers!
